Office 365 Spoofing Attacks – How to Protect Yourself

31st October 2017

Phishing campaigns and Ransomware attacks are advancing, accelerating and becoming even more dangerous by the day. With the increasing popularity of Office 365, hackers have now turned their attention and made Office 365 a high priority target.

Whilst hackers targeting Microsoft is nothing new, a rise in users of Office 365 has seen more phishing and ransomware attacks target this popular application.

To put this in perspective, Office 365 is now Microsoft’s fastest growing offering and therefore the security of this application is more vital than ever before.

Security breaches often come from phishing email campaigns and spoofing (the misuse of Identities such as MDs and CEOs)

Last year Microsoft saw a monumental 600% rise in attacks that targeted Office 365 which was confirmed by Jason Rogers, Microsoft’s Lead Program Manager.

Like most software, it is pretty much impossible to prevent 100% of attacks but there are a number of steps you can take to ensure that you are as secure as you can possibly be.

A comprehensive strategy is essential to make sure you don’t fall foul of an attack and lose valuable information and money.

Safe Attachments

Safe Attachments will allow you to prevent malicious attachments from impacting your emails. All suspicious content goes through a real-time behavioural malware analysis system that uses machine learning techniques to evaluate the content and suspicious activity. Unsafe attachments are sandboxed in a detonation chamber before being sent to recipients. The advantage of this is a malware free and cleaner inbox with better zero-day attack protection to keep your system as secure as it can be.

Exchange Online Protection

Exchange Online Protection provides protection against malicious links by scanning content. Safe Links expands on this by protecting your machine when a user clicks a link. While the content is being scanned, the URLs are rewritten to go through Office 365. The URLs are examined in real time, at the time a user clicks them. If a link is unsafe, the user is warned not to visit the site or informed that the site has been blocked. Reporting is available, so administrators can track which users clicked a link and when they clicked it.

Critical Insights

Gain critical insights into who is being targeted in your organization and the category of attacks you are facing. Reporting and message tracing allows you to investigate messages that have been blocked due to unknown viruses or malware, while URL tracing allows you to track individual malicious links in the messages that have been clicked.

Secure your mailboxes against advanced threats

Office 365 has a solution to help protect your email against new malware threats. With Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection, you can protect your mailboxes against new and sophisticated attacks in real time. Protect yourself and your business against unsafe attachments and malicious links, it complements the security features of Exchange Online Protection to provide better zero-day protection to ensure the maximum security for Office 365.

Get the peace of mind you deserve and the ultimate security for Office 365 for as little as £2 per user per month.
