Introducing the new Microsoft Edge browser
12th March 2020
There’s a new browser in town… Microsoft Edge
If you thought Microsoft Edge had been around for a few years, you’d be right…
However, as of January 2020, Microsoft have released their brand new browser, called… Edge.
This new version of Edge is built on the same core technology as Google Chrome, but with a whole host of extra functionality & features.
Welcome to Microsoft Edge Chromium
If you’re using ‘classic’ Edge, or an alternative browser such as Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox, it’s time to think about making the switch.
The new Edge browser offers the following features:
- More than a 10% performance improvement over other browsers.
- Windows Defender Smart screen integration offering a higher level of security than non-Microsoft browsers.
- Compatible with Google Chrome Add-ons, as well as those from the Microsoft store.
- Account integration with Microsoft services such as Active Directory and Azure AD – excellent for businesses!
In the Edge development pipeline, Collections allows you to organise web pages; you’ll see improved touch screen & inking functionality and web notes.
If you’re running Windows 10, your ‘classic’ Edge browser will be upgraded automatically over the coming weeks and months [currently being deployed to Windows 10 insiders]. We also fully expect the new Chromium version of Edge to be included with the upcoming Windows 10 ‘v2004’ feature update.
Any in-house applications that rely on your browser should be tested before deploying en-mass – you can manually download Edge Chromium from Microsoft.
